Unit Of Inquiry
BE HEALTHY, BE ACTIVE Kia Ora, Kia Korikori
The central idea will be: Personal choices contribute to our health
We will be looking at:
- Balanced choices- nutrition, exercise, and personal hygiene
- Strategies to allow for healthy relationships
- Daily habits and routines
- Consequences of choices
Key question(s)/provocation(s) will drive the inquiry
What are our responsibilities towards maintaining a healthy life ?
What strategies can help maintain a healthy lifestyle ?
What choices confront people ?
As part of this unit we will have a trained nutritionist, Andrea Kane, working with the Senior School. She will be working with our students on a programme called “Food for Thought” which is sponsored by Foodstuffs. The Senior School Students will also participate in the Life Education visit which will further develop their understanding of Hauora.
Healthy Morning Teas and Lunches
As we are endeavouring to encourage healthy habits, please can you ensure your child has a bottle of fresh water daily. We also ask that you support your child in bringing healthy snacks and lunches.
Maths
This term in Maths we will be focusing on Multiplication/Division, Probability and Measurement. Please continue to use the Math Buddy web site at home.
Year 6 Graduation
The Year 6 Graduation this year will be held in the Bucklands Beach School hall at 7.00 p.m. on Thursday 12 December. All Year 6 students will be required to be at this event. As this is a formal occasion all students are required to be in summer uniform and sandals. The girls will wear their light blue dress. More details about this event will be sent closer to the time.
Children’s Belongings
Please can you ensure your child has adequate stationery to last until the end of the year. Some children now need their pencil/pen and glue supplies replenished.
We still have some children with unnamed jumpers and shoes. Please can you ensure these are well named as we take these items off regularly during our athletics training.
PE
This term our students will be developing their small ball and athletics skills. The Senior School have a weekly PE rotation every Wednesday afternoon. It is essential that all students pack their sports shirts, shorts and a hat. We ask that the girls do not wear skorts as these tend to not allow our girls to clear the high jump bar. All senior classes have their PE lesson with Mr Grimmer on Thursday. Please ensure that your child also has their PE clothes on this day. As we are a Sun Smart school we strongly advise students to also apply sunblock prior to leaving home.
Year Six Big Day Out
The Big Day Out will be held on Wednesday 13 December. All parents are invited to attend. There will be a need for parent support.
BBI Orientation
All Year 6’s who are attending BBI next year will attend an orientation morning on Friday 24 November at 8.45 a.m. The students will travel to and from this morning by bus. Please ensure that your child is at school a little earlier on this day to ensure that we reach BBI at 9.00 a.m.
