Kia Ora, Nǐ hǎo, Greetings,

Welcome back to Term Four.  I hope you had an enjoyable break, and enjoyed some special time with your children.   There was lots of work going on in the school over the holidays.  The new turf under the playground looks fantastic.  New carpet has been laid in rooms seven to ten, which certainly brightens up the rooms.  Students were very happy with their new look classrooms.

Turf

Congratulations to Faye and the team of students who represented BBPS at the ULearn conference in the holidays.  I have had a lovely email from another principal who was very impressed with the knowledge and capability of our students.

A big thank you to our Chinese community and helpers for all of the preparation and organisation that went into teaching classes about the Autumn Festival.  It was a great way to end the term, learning about the festival and making dumplings together.

Staff Changes for Next Year

We wish Cindy Christensen all the best for her maternity leave, and look forward to meeting her daughter.  Mrs Robin Millinchip will be teaching in Room Two for the rest of the year.

We have a few teachers moving on next year for various reasons.  Mrs Johnson is retiring, and looking forward to spending some time with her grand children, Miss Davidson is off travelling overseas, Miss Ahern is off relieving, and Mrs Sanileva  is going to be working with us part time so she can spend more time with her family.  We thank each of them for the outstanding job they have done at BBPS.  We will be having a special farewell assembly later in the term.

We have been very fortunate in the current climate to have received a number of high quality applicants to interview for our positions.

PTA News

Bucklands Beach Primary School would like to participate in the local Howick Santa Parade this year. If students would like to join the school parade, a sign up sheet is in the office. We are working on the parade decorations – but if you have an outstanding idea or would like to help us, please do not be shy in coming forward and contact us at bbppta@gmail.com.

School Activities

Student Council  The student council are busy deciding on activities for term 4 for the whole school.  We have an art competition at the moment to show the BBPS school values.

We had a very successful school disco and all students would like to thank the BOT, PTA and Whanau Leaders for making it such as fun night.

Chess

Chess National TeamCongratulations to the Chess Team (Yuke Chan, Troy Lang, Julian Ling, Jay Hwang and Nicholas Cao) who represented BBPS at the 2017 National Chess Tournament last weekend in Hamilton.  The boys played exceptionally well against some very talented opponents.  They supported one another and stayed focussed each day and finished with outstanding results.  As a team they came 9th in New Zealand out of 20 schools.  Yuke finished 7th out of 98 players in the individual places. Thank you to the parents and siblings who travelled to Hamilton with the boys and supported them.

Student Participation at the ULearn17 Teachers’ Conference

 Ulearn4

On Thursday 12 October six students had an early morning start to travel to Hamilton to co-present their learning with Mrs Chilvers using digital technologies, electronics and crafts.  In the morning they helped in a workshop with thirty teachers and then again in the afternoon demonstrated their skills in a “pop-up” makerspace.  The feedback we received about the students was that “The students are amazing.”  There is a huge thank you to Bethany Hunt, Isabella Chen, Raymond Wang, Jackson Steele, Taylor Gray and Loren Venter who showed fantastic leadership skills.  The students each received a MBot Robot and a “Goody Bag” for their efforts.

It is with appreciation that we would like to acknowledge the following sponsorship for both parents and students who travelled to Hamilton.  PB Technologies Manukau, BP New Zealand, Howick Meats Vincent Street, The Mindlab, Revolve America, The EdTech Team America, Pak & Save, and Twinkl.

Middle Team Concert Term 4

This term the Middle Team students have been learning about the Arts, in particular dance and drama and they will be celebrating their learning by performing in a concert for families and friends. Each student will be performing in an item, and the students will also perform some items together.

There will be a matinee session on Tuesday 21 November from 11.10 – 12.30, as well as two evening sessions on Wednesday 22 November from 6 -7.30pm and Thursday 23 November from 6 -7.30pm.

Each family will be able to purchase two tickets for each evening concert, at a cost of $2 per ticket. The matinee will be free of charge.

The children will be dressing up for their performances, and may need to bring some items from home. The teachers will let each child know if they need to bring anything as part of their costume. Please send any costume items to school in a named plastic shopping bag by Monday 13 November at the latest.

The children are very excited about showcasing their learning and we are all looking forward to seeing you at the show.

Enviro News

You may have noticed the flowering pots of tulips and freesias that have been outside the library and near the asphalt area.  These are Room three’s contribution this year to the school environment.  The students are now busy planting Dahlia tubers which hopefully will flower during the summer months. Great work, Room 3 and Mrs Chilvers!
