I couldn’t stay quiet. Today I was going to Motat! There we would learn about inventions and innovations.

The first room my group visited was the fire room. The oldest fire truck there had been made in 1907, and some didn’t have roofs! I noticed they were different to the fire trucks these days because of the engines, and some had no water tanks.

Next we looked at an old classroom. It had a blackboard instead of a whiteboard, no colour, and a giant abacus. There were the rules of being a teacher on the wall. One of them was that you couldn’t be married!

After that we went onto a red tram but sadly we didn’t go for a ride, we just asked questions on it. We found out that it was built in 1906 and took only a few months to build. There were two floors, each with seats. We were on the top floor.

When we arrived at the health section, I was horrified at the ideas people had had. The oddest one was that they believed that by drilling a hole in your head you could cure headaches!

Finally we ran to Abby, a Motat worker, and listened to her talking about inventions and innovations (to re-invent something). We also learned that inventors need a patent to stop others from copying their idea. People used to write with a pen made from a feather called a quill. Instead of computers they used typewriters which had no delete button and no screen!

It’s amazing how one small invention can change the world!
