Kia Ora, Nǐ hǎo, Greetings,

We were very lucky to have a team of seven workers from the BNZ come in to do a working bee for the day.  Our front fence and gardens are looking great.  A big thank you to Kieran Turner and the team from BNZ.

Property

Room five have kindly temporarily moved to the library until the new prefab is ready, and they take up residence alongside the rest of the middle school.  Room twenty have moved into room five to accommodate new entrant enrolments.  Being in the old room five allows the new entrants to be physically close to the rest of the junior school.  Classes will still have access to issue and return library books, and for those who want to go and read quietly at lunch time, the library will be open from 1 – 1:25 each day.

Work on the prefab gets underway on Wednesday the 6th of September.  The far end of the school will be fenced off for two days, while the foundations for the prefab get underway.  This work should be completed by the end of Thursday, and the fences will moved in closer to the prefab while the remaining work is undertaken.

Navigating the Digital World – Keeping Kids Safe on the Net – 13 September 7pm

Our digital landscape is evolving at a rapid rate, which presents opportunities and challenges.  We have invited David Kinane in to run a parent evening looking at keeping our kids safe and confident on the internet.  David has been involved with schools and ICT since 1997.  He has a wealth of knowledge, and lots of good practical tips and ideas to keep kids safe at home.  All parents are invited.  If you would like to attend this evening, please email office@bbps.school.nz.  We will advise where in the school this will be held, when we have an idea of numbers.

Waller Avenue Crossing

Auckland Transport have agreed for us to have a Kea Crossing on Waller Avenue.  A Kea Crossing is a smaller version of the Clovelly Road crossing, used on roads with less traffic.  From today there will be flags for children to carry as they cross the road (under supervision) while we wait for the crossing to be installed.

PB4L

The school have been working hard on our respect during assemblies, including how we enter and leaving the hall quietly.  It would help us enormously if parents were also quiet once students start entering the hall.  Thanks for your support with this.

Chess

A huge congratulations to the Chess team who represented BBPS at the Howick Schools Chess Tournament on Thursday 10th August at Point View School.  Competition was tough and the team worked hard to finish with very impressive results.  Team A finished 1st and Team B, 4th out of 24 teams.  This resulted in them bringing home a cup with the title of Howick Schools Primary Champions 2017.  Team A has gained entry to the Chess Power Nationals Finals at the end of October in Hamilton as well as four members being invited as individuals.  Well done Yuke Chan, Troy Lang, Nicholas Cao, Julian Ling, Bruce Zhang, Nick Zhou, Samuel Cheng and Jay Hwang.  Thank you to parent helpers for transporting them and supporting them during the day.  Good luck for the Nationals.

PTA News

A big thanks for your efforts with the Maths-whizz-a-thon.   Your child will bring home their score by Friday, and they can start collecting sponsorship money.

BOT News

Earlier this year the Board reviewed the previous position on out of zone enrolments and made the decision to no longer accept these, except where a sibling was already enrolled at the school. Despite taking this action we’ve continued to see in-zone enrolments grow at a faster pace than we’ve previously seen. In response to this we’ve brought in a new prefab classroom and turned the old dental clinic into a far more desirable and usable space. Our focus is on ensuring that we are more actively managing the school role and our capacity to ensure we keep our class sizes at the optimal size to deliver the best learning outcomes for all children. It is likely to take at least another year before we see the impact of these changes starting to materialize. In the mean time we’ve been investing in extra teacher aide resources to ensure that we are supporting our teaching staff to deliver the best possible outcomes for all children.

Enviro News

In week four, we ran a Travelwise competition, rewarding children that walked, scootered or parked/walk to school.  We even had some children that were Travelwise when it was wet weather! Now that’s commitment!

Here’s a picture of the Travelwise tree, where children added a leaf if they were Travelwise on their way to school.

Six children were chosen for goodie bags of Travelwise prizes.  Good job to everyone that had a go at being Travelwise!

Sports News

The School Cross Country was held last Friday.  We now have the Inter-school Team to compete at Lloyd Elsmore Athletic Grounds on the 12 September named.  There will be running practice each Tuesday and Thursday morning 8am for members of this team.  The Pakuranga Athletic Club is offering schools the opportunity of having their students join club runners at the grounds each Sunday at 9 am to run.  Warmup is usually 8:50.  Entry and parking can be accessed from Cascades Road.  It is expected that each child selected to take part in Inter-school will run the course at least once before the Inter-school Race. It is essential all runners are familiar with the course before they compete as part of our school team.  Parents are welcome to take their child themselves to practice at anytime.   Mrs Chilvers will be at the grounds each Sunday morning but parents will need to be responsible for their child.  A plastic bag for shoes and a towel for washing are advised.  The run will take approx 20 minutes.

Basketball BBPS Green and BBPS Red are doing really well and showing great sportsmanship and determination at every game. Thanks to our managers and parents who support the team every week.

Netball Oor netball team is working hard  developing  their skills and have produced excellent results.

This weekend 2nd September we will have 3 teams competing in the FLL competition to be held at ACG Strathallan out at Karaka.  This is a public event so everyone is welcome.  Our teams have each designed a robot to undertake set missions and have completed a project on Animal Welfare which is the theme of this year’s challenge.

OMG Tech for Girls

On the weekend of 16 and 17 September OMGTech (Nano girl – Michelle Dickinson) is running sessions for girls 8 years – 12 years, who may be interested in coding activities.  They have named Scratch programming and the use of Makey Makeys as two activities.  The sessions are from 9-12 on Saturday 16 and 1-4 on Sunday 17.  Both workshops will be the same so girls have the choice of day they enrol.  Their aim is to promote Science and technology for girls.  The cost is $10 for a session.  Any girl interested please see Mrs Chilvers.

Koanga Festival

The Koanga Festival is on Saturday the 2nd of September at Somerville Intermediate. BBPS are performing in the gym at 10am for all who would like to come and support us.

HPPA Science Challenge

Yummy Stickers

Parents who are collecting Yummy Stickers for the school we appreciate your efforts.  Could any stickers be sent into school by September 14 please.  These are the stickers found on apples and labels from apple bags that are in New World Supermarkets, Pak and Save and some fruit shops.  Each year by returning the stickers our school has been issued with free sports equipment that we select from a catalogue.

Kind regards

Kelly Slater-Brown
