Kia Ora, Nǐ hǎo, Greetings

What a fantastic week we have had with our visitors from ERO (the Education Review Office).  They were blown away at the confidence of our students, across all levels of the school, and said that our school values drive a real positive culture across the school.  A group of students from year one to year six took our visitors for a tour on day one, and proudly showed off what they think makes BBPS special.   ERO saw our cross school relationships between students as a real strength, commenting that they usually get a tour from the ‘best’ year 6s, so it was very special to hear that our five year olds are just as able as our ten year olds, to conduct a tour and tell our story.  They also recognised our increased academic results, and the evolving teaching and learning which is improving these.  The official ERO report should be out in a month, which I look forward to sharing with you.

A big welcome to our  new students: Justin Ji, Richard Wang, Chloey Van Der Merwe, Kaitlyn Van Der Merwe & Evelyn Towersey.

Mid Year Results

In the last newsletter I shared our mid-year writing results.  Here are the reading and maths results, which are also showing excellent improvements.

Reading Mid Year Results vs 2017

*The 2018 data does not include students who cannot yet speak English.  In 2017, non-English speakers had to be included in the National Standards data for the ministry.

Our results continue to improve. The difference between the boys and girls achievement in the first half of 2018 shows the gap is closing between the genders. Group teaching will continue over the year and regular reading at home both being read to and reading with is encouraged.

Our mid year Maths results are very positive. We have had an impressive increase in the number of children achieving above the expected level and once again similar results in genders for on track, working at  by the end of the year.  We now need to look at increasing the number of girls in the above curriculum attainment to match the boys.  Remember Maths is everywhere, look for opportunities to talk to your children about the maths they see and experience.

Congratulations to our students and staff, and supportive parents, for working so hard to attain these achievement results.

Tread Lightly Caravan – visits BBP this month! We are all excited that the exciting and informative TLC will be at our school for almost 2 weeks. Every student will have the opportunity to learn about sustainability and interact with many hands-on and fun activities. Everyone in the school (including staff) will make a pledge to try to do more for our environment. Thank you to the parents who helped the classes to have a successful session and to the teachers for participating and encouraging deeper thinking around our sustainable actions.

A little reminder: GREEN DAY – TERM 3 – We have our BBP termly Green Day next Friday 17th of August. All classes will be involved with their enviro actions in class and around the school but if any parents can spare and hour  between 8am and 1pm on that date, then please see Mrs Riach in Room 1.

The Metre Heater rule – Energy and safety, as we are in the middle of winter many of us may have heaters in our bedrooms. please keep all pillows and fluffy toys away from these heaters as they could overheat.

Dance Festival

Congratulations to our dance group and Mrs Rist. Your performances held earlier this week at Elim were truly outstanding, and reflected all of the time you had put into rehearsing.  There was a real sense of enjoyment as you performed with smiles and enthusiasm!  Well done everyone.

I dived into my magic pool and I saw a pretty mermaid, a rainbow fish and a stripy treasure box. And there was lots of shiny and sparkly. There was lots of treasure in the box. I just took all of it.

Charlie Room 5

When I dived into the magic pool the first thing I saw was a mermaid. The mermaid had lots and lots of pearls on her. She was beautiful. I said “hello” but she didn’t answer so I moved on. Then I saw a big grey scary shark! I was terrified. He nearly gobbled me up! I swam away as fast as I could and on the way I bumped into a rainbow fish.

Katie Room 5

Dear Mum and Dad,

I think we really need a swimming pool because on a hot day we can put on our swimming togs and jump in the pool.

I feel this way because if you have come home from a long, tiring walk or run on a hot,  summers day and you feel as hot as the sun, you can put on your swimming togs and front flip into the pool! You can also use the pool for birthday parties and celebrations.

For example if you go out for the day in the blazing sun and you come back in the evening, you can drop your bags and belongings, get your swimsuit on and relax in the pool.

This is why I think we need a swimming pool! Don’t you agree?
