Kia Ora, Nǐ hǎo, Greetings,

Welcome to our new students and their families that have just started with us: Emme Selby, Violet Hewitson, Thomas Greening, Jaida Bennett, Mei-En Downs & Aidan Lin.

In assembly we have been focusing on the value of resilience (manawaroa).   We watched a clip from you tube that talked about having grit, which was a good discussion starter with students. Thomas Edison is probably the modern day king of perseverance. It is said he tried 3000 different prototypes for the light bulb before he was successful. He is known for his quotes like, “Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration” and “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up.”  The importance of resilience was also highlight in David Kinane’s digital technology evening last week.  Where as when we went to school, speed and producing the right answer were key, the focus now is moving to solving challenges and sticking at a problem which may take many attempts to solve, while learning along the way.   When David was asked how parents could help prepare students at home to succeed in solving problems, his suggestions were by finding challenges that increase perseverance like solving three dimensional puzzles, or working on a longer term goal together like preparing for a race or building a tree house together.  The important thing is teaching our students that it is good to struggle sometimes, and when you persevere through the struggle, you can learn so much more.  We use catch phrases at school like, “I can’t do that… yet”.  Students who develop good resilience with their learning succeed better at secondary school and university, because they believe in themselves, and are equipped to cope when the work becomes more challenging.

Community Survey

The community survey has now been fully analysed and gives us some great insights into the future direction of BBPS, and areas we need to put more focus on.  To view the results of the survey, please go to Community Survey.  Later in the year we will be taking a fresh look at our school vision, in conjunction with the Board, students, parents and teachers, and setting our strategic vision for the next few years.    The information from the survey will also help inform our vision and future plans.

Sports News

The rugby season is underway and BBPS has a squad of players who compete in the HPPA competition in the Under 50kg and Under 35kg grades. These grades are highly competitive and our teams have been improving in skills and ability each time they play.

In addition to the pool play competition, there has been the 7 A-side competition and the prestigious Barbarians Fun Day.

7 A-side Competition

The rugby day was fun and I bet everyone else had fun as well. Everyone loved the squishy mud and watching/playing some really exciting games. We had two teams, an under 50kg and an under 35kg. We all got to play seven games and we scored lots of tries. Overall it has to one most fun school days of our life – Tim Townend, Year 6.

Barbarian Fun Day

On Sunday 27th May we went to Bruce Pulman Park in Takanini to take part in the Barbarians Fun Day. We had three games against some really good schools from around Auckland and we had an awesome time getting advice from our Barbarian, former All Black Pita Alatini. We got to take a photo with some Blues players and got their autographs as well. Thank you to all the parents that took time out of their Sunday to take us there and to Ms Foulger for her vocal support from the sideline – Carter Penney, Year 6.
