A community of agile and collaborative learners – Proud of who we are, empowered to make a difference

Kia Ora, Nǐ hǎo, Hallo, Greetings,

Welcome back to 2020!  A special welcome to our new families who have joined BBPS.  We have started the year with 408 students enrolled at school.  There was a real sense of excitement and enthusiasm as I visited classes this morning, and many stories of wonderful holiday adventures.

Our remodelling of outside rooms one to five is finally underway.  The new covered shelter area will join up with the roof line of the library, there will be new seating that holds more students and it will be visible from the classroom so students can work outside, and some joinery will be replaced in the classes.  The plans can be viewed in reception if you are interested.  Areas will be fenced off as the builders work.  Heat pumps (or more importantly air conditioning units) have been installed in the remaining classrooms, meaning the whole school can work comfortably in this hot weather.

Pause, Breathe, Smile

To continue our focus on student well being, as a staff we had a day’s professional development in the holidays to learn the ‘Pause, Breathe, Smile‘ programme.  It was an amazing day of learning that will benefit both students and staff.  We chose this programme as it is research based, with the evidence showing that the programme:

  • Improves focus and attention for better learning outcomes
  • Increases calm and student wellbeing
  • Enhances self-awareness and pro-social behaviour
  • Reduces test anxiety and boosts resilience
  • Decreases teacher stress and burnout

We look forward to rolling this out across the school, over the term.

Meet the Teacher

Come along and meet your child’s new teacher on the 13th of February and hear about routines and learning for the year.

Meet in your child’s room – juniors 5:30 – 6, middles 6 – 6:30 and seniors 6:30 to 7.

You can leave your school aged children in the library to be supervised while you attend the meeting, but will need to organise alternative arrangements for preschoolers, or keep them with you.  This year the ‘Getting to Know You’ booklet for parents to fill out will be online.  Keep an eye out for the email.

Calling for Community Cultural Expertise! (Project Based Learning)

For the first half of the term, we are using the Google Summit model to run a Cultural Summit for students to learn about each others’ culture.  Using students to present to other students develops a range of skills, leadership and gives scope for student led learning.  We are looking for some parents who would be able to work with groups of students from different cultures, to help them prepare a presentation and some follow up activities, and present to other pupils.  There will be a teacher with you also, however we need the community expertise  to help students.

The planned dates for preparing the students are the 17th, 18th and 21st of February from 1:45pm – 2:45pm.  The planned dates to run the Cultural Summit are 24 – 26th, 11am – 2:45pm.  We are also looking for some parents who might have some expertise around filming, editing, and/or interviewing to work with a group of students to capture some of the summit.  Please email diana@bbps.school.nz if you are able to help us out.  We think this is going to be an exciting way to link with our community, and for us to learn and appreciate our exciting melting pot of cultures.  There will be events for parents to attend also.  More details will follow shortly.

Reminders

We are a water only school for drink bottles.  Please keep sweets for treats out of school.   We also ask that you don’t send in food for birthdays.  Students are not to share food, as there are food allergies across the school.

Coronavirus

Students have been reminded this morning about hygiene to keep everyone safe and healthy.  Surfaces around the school have been treated with Zoono Microbe Shield, and there is hand sanitiser in every room.   Please do not send your child to school if they are showing cold and flu symptoms, as you will be called to collect them.  A reminder also that if your child has vomiting or had diahorea,  they must stay off for 24 hours from the last incidence.  Thanks for your support with keeping everyone well.

School Payments

Please remember that all payments for school donations or activities can be made online through your Kindo account.  You can pay via American Express, Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay (fees apply), POLi or bank transfer (no fees). Add regular topups if you’d like, then allocate to payments when you’re ready, or just pay as you go.  Go to www.mykindo.co.nz or via the link on our school website.  Access shop and payments https://shop.tgcl.co.nz/shop/user_home.shtml?session=false&shop=Bucklands%20Beach%20Primary%20School

Parking / Road Safety

We have already had complaints from the neighbours opposite the school about cars parking across driveways.  Please be considerate of our neighbours, and avoid getting ticketed or towed away.

We are encouraging our families to travel to school in a sustainable way.  One of our Mothers was nudged by a car on her scooter, whilst crossing the road with her children.  Please look carefully for pedestrians and scooters, and if you are crossing Waller Rd, or in front of the schools, use the crossing.

Looking forward to a great term!
