BBPS Values………

BBPS senior students are inquiring, connecting, striving to meet the

national standards and are future focused and resilient!

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We are all looking forward to spring and hopefully a little less rain!

The calendar is already very full with lots happening this term.

Reports and Conferences

We hope that you all enjoyed the opportunity to share your child’s progress in our Three Way Conferences.  Please don’t forget to use the “How we can help at home” section of the report.  If you have any further questions, please make a time to visit with your child’s class teacher.

Unit of Inquiry

Our main inquiry topic will focus on the central idea …

Local and global communities are interconnected through trade.

Our lines of inquiry will be ……

  • how NZ trading systems have changed over time
  • the role of supply and demand
  • marketability of goods and services
  • the impact the global economy has on the local economy
  • the impact the local economy has on the global economy
  • fair trade

By the end of this unit we hope your child can explain…….

  • The difference between exports and imports
  • What NZ’s leading exports and imports are
  • The key countries NZ trades with
  • NZ’s part in fair trade
  • Why trade is important for NZ

We ask that you support your child’s learning by talking to them and encouraging them to bring current information about trade and our trading partners from newspaper articles or the TV.   We really want our children to be active participants in their learning.   If you know of anyone who is able to speak on the subject of exporting and importing, please let us know.

E-Learning

The Senior School is continuing to develop its knowledge of ways to create meaningful learning experiences with the use of iPads.  Mr Kinane is also supporting the team.   Our students are all becoming experts at using apps and Google Docs to communicate their learning.  We hope you are enjoying viewing these from your home. Our students enjoy your ongoing feedback.

Our school has once again been invited to have students present their learning using digital technologies at the 2017 Google Educators’ Student Summit, to be held at Ormiston Junior College and Ormiston Primary School on Friday August 11 2017.  We have a total of 81 students this year who are working to present a range of apps and software from Y4-Y6 in our school. Mrs Chilvers and Mrs Riach will be taking our students to this event.

Maths

Term 3 will focus on multiplication and division, measurement of angles, fractions, decimals, percentages and transformational geometry.  We will focus on statistics as part of our unit of inquiry study.  It is important that our students continue to practice their multiplication and division facts in order to maintain a quick recall.   Maths homework will be based on MathsBuddy and Sumdog. Parents please use the MathsBuddy videos to become familiar with the strategies so you can actively support your child.

Speech Preparation

Over the next weeks we will be working on our speeches in class.  During weeks 4 and 5,  the students will be presenting their speeches in class.  Each year group will be selecting finalists for our school competition which will take place on September 1st at 11am in the school hall.   All parents are welcome to attend.  Our judges will be Mrs Moira Rowlands, our new Associate Principal and Mrs Lisa Ray, our previous Junior School Team Leader.  We will be using the same scoring rubric as will be used at the Auckland finals.  Our winning finalist will go on to represent our school at the Owairoa final on the 19th September.  If they win this competition, they will then go on to the Auckland final.

Dance Festival

The dance festival will be held at 7 pm at Elim College on the 7th and 8th August.   Mrs Rist has prepared our senior group for this.  There is a limit on the number of tickets per family, $5 per person.  The tickets will be available for families who have children participating.  These will become available from Mrs Bayer at the school office.

The Senior School will involved in a performance held on the nights of the 22nd and 23rd August.

The audience cost will be $2 per person. Due to the hall size each family will  be allocated 2  tickets. If you require extra, you can leave your name at the school office should extra seats become available. There will be a free dress rehearsal on the 22nd August at 1.40 pm, anyone who does not have tickets for the night performance is welcome to attend this.

Tuesday 22 August 1.40-3 pm – matinee

Wednesday 23 August 6.30-8 pm – evening performance

Trees for Survival

Our children who regularly participate in the Trees for Survival group will be involved in a planting day on the 28th July. Students have had an opportunity to sign up for this.

The Senior School continues to look at opportunities to encourage environmentally friendly habits.

Physical Education

The Senior School classes have a PE session on Thursdays.   It is important that your child is prepared for this session with their whanau shirt and shorts. Last term there were the same students each week who turned up unprepared, on a number of occasions. We ask  that you support your child in being organised and ensuring their clothes are in their bag in order for Mr Grimmer to run an effective PE programme and for hygiene reasons.

We suggest all children also bring sneakers, as they will be running on our concrete fitness track. The children must come to school in school uniform with their correct school shoes.  If their PE session is at the end of the day they may go home in sports uniform.

Senior School Sport

We have a highly organised sport rotation for the Senior School on Wednesdays*. We ask that all girls and boys bring shorts and their whanau T-shirt and they change out of these after their session. Girls may also wear bike pants. (* If there is a change to this day you will be informed by email.)

This term we started our training for the Inter School Gymnastics competition. This will take place on the  23rd/24th August.

We have also begun training for the Cross Country competition, which will be held at school on the afternoon of  25th August. The interschool final for Cross Country will be Thursday 12tth September We would like all students to focus on improving their running fitness over the holidays in preparation for our Cross Country event.

If your child cannot participate in Physical Education we ask you send a note.

ICAS Competitions

For those children who have signed up these will be held on the 1st August (English) and 15th August (Maths). Please ensure your child has a ruler for the Maths exam and they are outside Room 4 at 7.30 am.

Bake Off

The Year 6 students will be selling baking on the 26th September,  as part of their fund raising to cover their Big Day out at the end of the year.  The Enviro team will hold a sausage sizzle on the 15th August.
