Farewell

Sadly, we will be farewelling Hannah Saul at the end of the year, as she is relocating to Wellington.  Hannah has made so many contributions across the school, as well as being a fabulous classroom teacher.  Wellington are very lucky to have Hannah!  We wish her the very best in her new school.

2019 Class Placements

It is that time of year when we are beginning the process of placing children in classes for 2019. This is a robust and structured process where staff work collaboratively using their expertise, experience and knowledge of your child to ensure that they are placed in the best learning environment for their needs. To place your children in classes we use the following process:

•  2018 data collated for each child.

•  Teachers complete a placement form for each child, which includes data, specific learning needs, and any comment that will  help in a positive placement.

• Teachers ask children to identify three friends they would like to be with.  Students are guaranteed to get one of their friends (as long as the children identified will result in a positive learning relationship in the classroom).

• Draft class lists are put together taking into account teacher and student comments.

• Teachers collaboratively check the class lists and make any necessary changes.

• Towards the end of term children will spend time with their new teacher and class.

We appreciate this can be an anxious time for parents, however, we ask that you trust us in this process and can be assured that we will make every effort to place your child with the teacher who we feel is most appropriate to ensure that they have a productive and positive 2019.

Teacher Strike

A reminder that teachers will be striking on Monday the 12th of November.  Our school will be closed on that date. While we regret the inconvenience we know this will cause, we need to send a clear message to the Government that we are standing strong for our students.

Class News

During the holidays three of our students, Taylor Gray, Klaas Kamp and Elaina Thomason helped Mrs Chilvers by co-presenting at the Ulearn18 conference to a group of teachers, showcasing the technology that students use at Bucklands Beach Primary.  They undertook two sessions, the first of which was a session of 60 teacher participants and the second they worked with a group of 24 teachers.  Their task was to explain, demonstrate and answer questions about their learning.  For their efforts PB Tech gave each of our students an 8″ tablet for their personal use.  Thank you Elaina, Klaas and Taylor.

The Year 5 Camp on the school field is currently being planned for December 7.  We have been fortunate to have received Sponsorship from Fresh Choice Half Moon Bay Marina, Sanitarium Breakfast Foods and Ray White Real Estate Agents of Bucklands Beach.  Our aim was to keep the cost to parents to a minimum.  We thank the above businesses for their support.

This last week the Senior School have had a visit from Ester the educator from Vector Energy as part of their Inquiry topic.  She spent two 45 minute sessions with the students.  The first centred around safety with electricity while the second was about the types of energy we use in our daily lives.  The sessions were extremely informative.

Chapter 7  The Singing Books Room

Mr Willy Wonka flung open the chocolate coloured door.  Charlie and Grandpa Joe saw an eye blinding sight. There it was. A room full of singing books.

“The singing books room is a one of a kind place where you can find rare singing books,” said Mr Wonka proudly.  In the far end of the room, there stood an enormous bookshelf filled with rows and rows of singing books. The edge of the shelf was covered in beautiful shimmering gold silk that was shining underneath the bright lights of the chandelier. The singing books are identical – that’s why it’s so hard to tell them apart.

“Singing books can only be found in my factory, or in Skittish.  Just in case you don’t know, Skittish is where singing books come from,” explained Mr Wonka.

Just then, they heard a whimpering sound coming from one of the singing books.  He’s especially big, Charlie thought to himself. But Mr Wonka broke his thoughts.  “Oh no no no no noooooooo!” he cried dramatically as he hurled himself towards the whimpering book.

“What’s wrong?”asked Charlie.

“This book,” said Mr Wonka, suddenly, turning serious, “is the leader of all the singing books.  If he is ill, or has any other problems, it will be very, very bad. Why? Because we need to go to the safe! And we have a ginormous problem here. This one has a ripped page! That is even more worse than getting sick!”

“Why do we need to go to the safe?” asked Charlie.

“Because, my dear boy, in the safe, there is a special glue that was made by my ancestors,” Mr Wonka whispered to Charlie.  At the sound of that, Charlie’s eye turned as round as saucers.

“But Mr Wonka, are we REALLY going to the safe?” little Charlie asked, getting more and more excited by the second.”

“Charlie, we know Mr Wonka wouldn’t take visitors to the safe!” laughed Grandpa Joe.

“Now, I wouldn’t be so sure about that,” Mr Wonka said slyly with a twinkle in his eye. . .because we’re going there right now!” Charlie and Grandpa Joe stood there, frozen on the spot, with their mouths hanging wide open, forming a perfect O.

There was a moment of silence.

“D-do  y-you actually m-mean that w-we’re g-going to the safe?” Charlie finally stuttered.

“Of course that’s what I mean!” cried Mr Wonka, “I would be delighted to let you visit my safe!”

“Then off we go!” cried Grandpa Joe.

Mr Wonka pulled out a rectangle shaped remote control with about one trillion buttons on it.

“How do you control that thing?”asked Grandpa Joe in bewilderment. Mr Wonka ignored him completely (which was very rude), and pressed a tiny green button at the very edge of the remote.

Suddenly, a mirror shaped like an oval appeared in front of them.

“Run through the mirror and don’t look back,” instructed Mr Wonka. Charlie and Grandpa Joe did as they were told and almost immediately after they ran through the mirror, it disappeared. “Where did the mirror go?” asked Charlie to Mr Wonka with a puzzled  expression on his face.

“To the trash bin,” he replied. Charlie stayed quiet.  As they went through the mirror, Charlie felt strangely comfortable. He felt like he was snuggling in a luxury king sized bed with an extra layer of silk. The pillow felt like the most expensive and softest thing you could ever own. Grandpa Joe, on the other hand, felt very, VERY uncomfortable although Charlie hadn’t realized this yet as he was still daydreaming about his comfortableness.

After a few minutes, another mirror appeared in front of them just like the one before. “Jump inside the mirror like you did before,” Mr Wonka instructed. Charlie and Grandpa Joe did what they were told AGAIN and landed with a loud thud. They had landed in a clearing with an enormous TV in front of them.

Two girls called Haylie and Lamilie were walking through the woods one day, when suddenly, it started to rain. Lamilie was lucky, and got under some shelter, but Haylie wasn’t as lucky. When it stopped raining, one of the trees turned her into a tree. Lamilie came back shortly after Haylie was turned into a tree. The tree that turned Haylie into a tree said to Lamilie, you need to choose one of the trees, only ONE or your friend will become a tree forever. Lamilie answered quickly and without hesitation, and surprise surprise! She got it right! But how?

“Ah, yes. I remember that you have to answer a riddle to get to the safe.” said Mr Wonka softly. He turned to Charlie and Grandpa Joe.

“Do any of you know the answer?”

“I’m still thinking!” said Charlie and Grandpa Joe at the exact same time. “Okay, okay! You don’t  need to yell at me!” Mr Wonka said with his eyebrows raised.

After a few minutes, Charlie spoke up. “ I think I know the answer to the riddle.”

“What is it?”asked Grandpa Joe and Mr Wonka eagerly.

“The riddle said, AFTER it stopped raining, the tree turned Haylie into a tree. That means, Haylie was a dry tree! So when Lamilie came back, she could tell between all the other trees and her friend!” he exclaimed.

“What an intelligent answer! Now we just need to wait for the tick.” Mr Wonka said nervously. Straight after Mr Wonka said the word tick, a giant green tick appeared on the TV. “Yeeeessss!” whooped Mr Wonka.

Not long after that, a rectangle shaped safe showed up on the screen. “The safe!” said Charlie happily. Mr Wonka didn’t say anything but started to advance towards the TV. “Watch out. I’m going to be very fast.”

Mr Wonka put one hand INTO the TV and then the other. “ I’m going to get the safe out of the TV”. He made grunting noises as he took the safe out of the TV. After what seemed like 100 hours, he FINALLY got the safe out of the TV.  “Yep, you were VERY fast.” said Charlie sarcastically. “There’s no time to be sarcastic. We need to open the safe and get the glue.” said Mr Wonka seriously. With one swift move, Mr Wonka pulled out a tiny golden key from his plum coloured coat and inserted the key into the keyhole on the safe.

CLICK! Went the safes door as it opened. After they retrieved the glue, Mr Wonka said: “We need to go back to be singing books room and put the glue on the book that had a ripped page.” Then, he pulled out the remote he had earlier and this time, he pressed a red button in the middle of the remote.

Suddenly, the entire room started shaking madly. “What’s happening?” Charlie yelled over all the noise. “We’re going back to the Singing Books Room!” Mr Wonka yelled back. “So hold on tight!”

All of a sudden, Mr Wonka, Charlie and Grandpa Joe all disappeared and then reappeared in the singing books room. “Quickly, put the glue on the book with ripped page,” urged Mr Wonka. Charlie did it, and almost immediately after he did, the page mended with a loud CLANG. “Thank you thank you!  I don’t know what to say! You saved my life, and when a human saves a singing book, they get to hear our secret song!

“We DID IT!” they cheered together as they pumped their fists in the air.

Charlie, Mr Wonka and Grandpa Joe left the room while listening to the lovely peaceful tune of the secret song. They got into the corridor and turned right and headed towards the smell of delicious jelly.

Girls Cricket

On November 13th November a team of Year 6 girls will be representing BBPS as the Auckland South-Eastern Zone Champions in the Auckland Champ of Champs Cricket Tournament at Eden Park. They will have some tough games against some well drilled school teams representing their respective zones so we wish them the best of luck! It is an honour for our school to be invited to the tournament as zone winners and it is a unique opportunity for the eight girls who have been selected.

Middle & Senior Athletics Day

This will be held on Monday 5th November and all students aged 8 and above on the 1st November 2018 will have the opportunity to compete in a range of events to qualify for the HPPA Inter-School athletics competition. The students will be rotated around the events in their age groups and we hope to complete all finals at the end of their rotations. The lists of winners will be published once all times/distances have been confirmed.

We still need parent help to make the day run smoothly – please email nick@bbps.school.nz to confirm if you can help.

Reminders

Dogs are not permitted on the school grounds at all between 8am and 4pm.  Please don’t bring your dogs into school, including carrying them in.

A plea from our neighbours:

Please respect our neighbours, and don’t park across or too close to their driveways.  Unfortunately this is happening frequently at the moment.  When cars are parked illegally, it makes it very dangerous for our neighbours to get in and out of their driveway.  Illegally parked cars could be towed away at the owner’s expense.
